Washington, Myers lead Lander past Brewton-Parker

Box Score

GREENWOOD – J.R. Washington scored 14 points, leading a balanced Lander attack as the Bearcats put away Brewton-Parker 80-59 in a non-conference men's basketball game Tuesday night at Horne Arena.

Mario Pendarvis and Darius Carrier added 12 points apiece for Lander, which improved to 2-2 on the season.

Kenny Cunningham led the Barons (3-1) with 19 points, Darrie Stephens scored 15 points, and Steven Edwards added 10 points.

Vershawn Mannings led Brewton-Parker with seven assists while former Lander player Dawda Njie paced the Barons with seven rebounds.

Several other Bearcats had big games, including the 6-foot Denzel Myers with seven points, a game-high eight rebounds and two blocked shots off the bench. Jareal Smith added nine points for Lander while Michael Panaggio had seven points and nine assists.

The Bearcats made 28 of 58 shots from the floor (48 percent), 19 of 29 free throws (66 percent) and five of 15 from 3-point range (33 percent).

Brewton-Parker hit 18 of 54 shots from the floor (33 percent), 16 of 18 free throws (89 percent) and seven of 22 from behind the arc (32 percent).

Lander out-rebounded the Barons 42-32.

After falling behind 5-0 and being tied at 11-all at the 13-minute mark, Lander took control of the game with 12 unanswered points. Carrier started the run with a three-point play, Washington followed with a 3-pointer and also had a 3-point play, Myers made one free throw, and Carrier scored in the paint for a 23-11 Bearcats lead with 9:04 to go in the first half.

After the Barons pulled within 23-15, Washington hit his second 3 of the game, Mike Lee collected a steal and dunk, and Alen Hardy made two free throws for a 30-15 Lander lead with 7:06 left.

But Brewton-Parker used a 9-3 run to pull back within single digits, 33-24, at the five-minute mark on a pair of Cunningham 3s and a Stephens three-point play.

Jareal Smith and Carrier each scored in the paint to push the Bearcat lead to 13 before Cunningham's third consecutive 3-pointer pulled the visitors back within 10 at 37-27 with 3:40 to go.

Lander stretched its lead to 14 with a four-point play as Carrier scored inside and was fouled but failed to convert the three-point play opportunity. Teammate Ricardo Martin grabbed the offensive rebound and scored for a 41-27 lead at the 1:40 mark.

After the Barons pulled back within 10 with four free throws, the Bearcats closed the half with a nice basket as Martin tapped in Washington's missed 3-point attempt for a 43-31 halftime advantage.

After a two-for-eight start from the floor for Lander, it made 13 of its last 21 shots in the first half.

The Bearcats could not shake Brewton-Parker early in the second half as the visitors closed within nine, 46-37, with 17:17 left. The Barons had several opportunities to pull closer, including one possession of four missed shots and another possession with a missed shot inside and an air ball 3-point attempt. So it was still 46-37 with 15:24 left.

But Hardy's basket in the paint and Panaggio's steal and layup pushed Lander's lead to 50-37 inside the 15-minute mark.

After Deion Bernard's basket pulled Brewton-Parker within 11, Pendarvis had a big stretch for Lander. He hit two free throws to end one possession, and drove down the lane for a basket, was fouled and converted a three-point play for a 55-39 lead with 13:30 to go.

After Edwards hit a 3 to close the Barons back within 13, Lander would build its biggest lead of the night at 18 points, 60-42, when Panaggio nailed a 3-pointer, then got a steal and an assist on a Myers basket.

Brewton-Parker's Cameron Bokenham and Lander's Washington exchanged 3s as the Bearcats were up 63-45 with 10:32 left.

A nice pass from Myers to Carrier for a layup gave Lander a 66-49 lead with 7:45 left, and the Bearcats would take their largest lead of the game at 19 points, 68-49, on Washington's basket with 7:21 to go.

Lander took its first 20-point lead at 72-52 with 5:25 left on Lee's two free throws.

Myers had an offensive rebound and tap-in, and then a blocked shot that led to a pair of Panaggio free throws for a 76-52 advantage at the four-minute mark. Myers would add another blocked shot later.
