Box Score GREENWOOD – The Lander women's basketball team placed three players in double figures Saturday afternoon, but couldn't overcome an experienced Wingate team as the Bulldogs pulled away for a 74-67 non-conference victory in Horne Arena.
Wingate improves to 2-0 overall, while Lander moves to 2-2.
Kayla West led the Lady Bearcats with 19 points, while Ty'hesha Reynolds added 18 points and five assists, and Alexis Armstrong had a double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds.
The Bulldogs were paced by Janitsha Willliams (17 points, nine rebounds), Amber Neely (15 points, eight assists), and Kayla Harris (11 points).
Lander connected on 21-of-68 field goals (30.9 percent), 5-of-17 threes (29.4 percent), and 20-of-28 free throws (71.4 percent).
Wingate was 24-of-53 from the floor (45.3 percent), 7-of-12 from the three (58.3 percent) and 19-of-25 from the foul line (76 percent).
The Bulldogs built up an early 17-8 lead at 15:31, then Lander began cutting the margin when Portia McCray hit a jumper at 13:59.
After two Harris free throws put Wingate up 19-10 at 11:58, Lander went on a 7-0-run to cut the margin to 19-17 at 9:10 on a West jumper.
Armstrong's jumper at 5:47 tied the game at 23-23, then Reynolds put Lander up 24-23 with a free throw at 5:25.
After trading the lead two more times, Wingate outscored Lander 17-7 the remainder of the period to take a 42-33 halftime lead.
Wingate extended its lead to 15 points with 15:39 left in the game when Neely sank two free throws.
Lander rallied over the next six minutes to outscore Wingate, 11-1, and cut the lead to 53-48 on West's three pointer with 9:45 remaining.
Once again the Bulldogs pulled away when they stretched their lead to 64-50 on a Harris jumper with 5:53 left.
Lander then went on a 10-2 scoring spree and pulled within 66-60 with 1:36 left on an Armstrong jumper.
Wingate outrebounded Lander, 44-40, but Lander grabbed 15 offensive boards compared to the Bulldogs' eight. Lander committed only 10 turnovers, compared to Wingate's 20.
Lander will next host Columbia College at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 20.
