GREENWOOD – M.K. Pegram struck out seven, while Brittney Sheriff and Alyssa Hartley combined for three RBIs in the fourth inning of the second game Sunday afternoon to lead the Lander softball team to a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader split against No. 15 Augusta State at Doug Spears Field. Augusta State won the first game, 8-0, then Lander claimed the second, 4-2.
Lander moves to 22-22 overall and 4-12 in the PBC, while Augusta State is 28-8, 9-3.
In the second game, Pegram (4-3) earned the complete-game win on the mound after walking four and allowing one earned run on four hits in the seven innings.
Augusta State's Heather Hughes (9-4) took the loss after allowing four earned runs on eight hits in 3.2 innings pitched.
Lander took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on Chasity Davis' RBI single that drove in Jaime Presnell.
The Jaguars tied the score at 1-1 in the fourth when Jessica Thornton singled, stole second, advanced to third on a Lander error then scored on a rundown at second.
The Bearcats took a 4-1 lead in the bottom of the inning when, with two outs and bases loaded, Hartley drove in Sarah Fuller and Sheriff's two-run double plated Arielle Buchholz and Casey Corbitt.
ASU trimmed the lead to 4-2 in the seventh when Kacee Camp's groundout scored Renae Kimbell.
For Lander, Sheriff and Corbitt went 2-for-3.
In the first game, ASU's Emily Headrick (14-2) earned the win after striking out five and allowing just three hits in five innings pitched.
Lander's Tyler Riendeau (1-2) took the loss, striking out one and allowing four earned runs on nine hits in three innings pitched.
Augusta State took a 3-0 lead in the second inning on RBI singles by Kimbell, Hannah Vaughn and Molly Walton. The Jaguars made it 4-0 in the third on Kimbell's RBI triple that plated Macy Terry.
Camp's solo homerun in the fourth stretched the Augusta State lead to 5-0. Thornton led the fifth off with a double and later scored on a Lander throwing error to give the Jaguars a 6-0 advantage.
Augusta State ended the game in the sixth inning via the eight-run rule when Camp's RBI single and Kristen Jones' RBI double gave the Jags an 8-0 lead.
For Lander, Sheriff batted 2-for-4.
For Augusta, Camp went 4-for-4, Kimbell 3-for-3, Lauren Yeargan 2-for-3 and Walton 2-for-4.
