GREENWOOD – The Lander softball team got back on the winning track Thursday afternoon when the Bearcats swept Brevard College, 3-0 and 4-0, in a non-conference doubleheader at Doug Spears Field.
Lander improves to 12-12 overall, while Brevard drops to 9-11.
In the first game, Lander's Kelsey Davis (1-2) earned the win after striking out three, walking one and allowing four hits in six innings pitched. Hayley Leissner recorded her first save of the year with two strikeouts.
Brevard's Kayla Clemens (6-5) suffered the loss with one walk and three earned runs on five hits in six innings.
Brittney Sheriff gave Lander a 1-0 lead in the first inning when she tripled then scored on Taylor Donson's groundout. The Bearcats stretched the margin to 2-0 in the second on Casey Corbitt's RBI double to right centerfield. Donson led off third inning with a home run over the left center wall to make it 3-0.
For Lander, Donson batted 2-for-3, while Brevard's Meredith Davenport went 2-for-3.
In the second game, Lander's Tyler Riendeau (1-0) collected a win in her first collegiate start after striking out three and allowing three hits in four innings pitched. Leissner, with six strikeouts in three innings, collected her second save of the day.
Brevard's Alyssa Miller (3-6) was the losing pitcher with four strikeouts, four walks and three earned runs on seven hits in six innings pitch.
Lander took a 1-0 lead in the first when Melanie Davis' sacrifice fly scored Sheriff. The Bearcats made it 2-0 in the fifth after Sheriff singled, advanced to third on two Brevard errors, then scored on a wild pitch.
The Lander defense stood tough in the sixth inning when Brevard had bases loaded with no outs. The next batter popped out to third base then Leissner struck out the following two.
The Bearcats scored their final two runs in the sixth. Sheriff's RBI double to centerfield plated pinch runner Kelsey Davis to stretch the Bearcat lead to 3-0, then Donson's RBI single drove home Sheriff.
For Lander, Sheriff went 2-for-3 with one double and Melanie Davis batted 2-for-2.
Brevard's Emily Boykin was 2-for-3.
