GREENWOOD – The Lander softball team saw its four-game win streak come to an end Wednesday afternoon when the Bearcats dropped a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader to Francis Marion at Doug Spears Field. FMU won the first game, 2-0, and took the second, 2-1.
FMU improves to 15-7 overall and 4-2 in the PBC, while Lander moves to 10-12, 0-4.
In the first game, Francis Marion scored one run each in the first and sixth innings. In the first, Ashley Jaramillo's RBI single plated Sara Broderick, then Jazz Holliday's RBI double scored Jaramillo in the sixth.
FMU's Katie Carnes (6-2) earned the complete game shutout victory with seven strikeouts. She allowed just four hits.
Lander's Hayley Leissner (7-6) was tagged with the loss after striking out three, walking one and allowing two earned runs on seven hits in the complete seven innings.
Brittney Sheriff went 2-for-2 for Lander, while Holliday (1-for-3) and Carnes (1-for-3) both doubled for FMU. Broderick went 2-for-4.
In the second game, FMU's Taylor Luff (3-2) was awarded the win after striking out five, walking one and allowing five hits in 6.1 innings pitched. Carnes collected her first save of the season with one strikeout in two-thirds of an inning.
Lander's M.K. Pegram (2-2) suffered the loss after striking out three, walking six and allowing two earned runs on five hits in the complete seven innings.
FMU scored both its runs in the first inning when Tristan Faile's RBI single scored Destinea Schneider and Jaramillo went home on Holliday's groundout.
With bases loaded and one out in the second, Lander cut the lead to 2-1 on Casey Corbitt RBI fielder's choice.
For Lander, Melanie Davis (1-for-2) doubled.
For the Patriots, Faile (2-for-4) doubled and Schneider batted 2-for-4.
