AMERICUS, Ga. - The Lander softball team split a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader at Georgia Southwestern Sunday afternoon, winning the first game, 3-1, and dropping the second, 5-2.
Lander moves to 18-20 overall and 2-10 in the PBC, while Georgia Southwestern is 14-22, 1-9.
In the first game, Hayley Leissner (11-11) earned the win after striking out six, walking one and allowing one earned run on three hits in the complete seven innings.
GSW's Brittny Dennison (0-7) took the loss, striking out one, walking two and allowing one earned run on one hit in three innings pitched.
Lander broke the scoreless game in the seventh inning to take a 3-0 lead when Kelsey Davis' RBI single plated Casey Corbitt, Jaime Presnell's sacrifice fly scored Amanda Hamby and Chasity Davis' groundout sent Brittney Sheriff home.
The Hurricanes rallied for one run in the bottom of the inning on Rachel McElroy's solo homerun.
In the second game, Katie Mattox (4-7) was awarded the win after striking out three, walking one and allowing two earned runs on six hits in five innings.
Lander's Hamby (2-4) took the loss, walking two, and allowing four earned runs on eight hits in six innings.
GSW took a 2-0 lead in the first when Gabby Buck's RBI double plated Hayley Knight and Buck later scored on a wild pitch. The Hurricanes made it 3-0 in the third on McElroy's RBI double.
The Bearcats cut the lead to 3-2 in the fifth on an RBI single by Sheriff and a Kelsey Davis groundout.
The Hurricanes scored one run each in the fifth and sixth innings on RBI singles by McElroy and Mason Moreland.
For Lander, Chasity Davis batted 2-for-3 and Sheriff went 2-for-4.
For GSW, McElroy went 2-for-2.
