Lander softball drops two to Lenoir-Rhyne

GREENWOOD – The Lander softball team dropped a non-conference doubleheader to Lenoir-Rhyne Thursday afternoon at Doug Spears Field. L-R won the first game, 4-1, and the second, 2-1, in eight innings.

Lenoir-Rhyne improves to 26-9 overall, while Lander slips to 15-15.

In the first game, L-R's Dawon Millwood (14-4) earned the win with four strikeouts, two walks and one earned run on four hits in seven complete innings.

Lander's M.K. Pegram (2-3) suffered the loss after striking out two, walking four and allowing four earned runs on five hits in three innings. In four innings of relief, Tyler Riendeau struck out four and allowed three hits.

Lenoir-Rhyne took a 2-0 lead in the first inning when Jody Mizelle, who led off with a double to left center, went home on Carliee Carpenter's RBI single, then, with bases loaded and one out, Carpenter scored on Megan Laxton's groundout.

Lander cut the lead to 2-1 in the second after Alyssa Hartley doubled down the left field line, advanced to third on a wild pitch and crossed the plate on Casey Corbitt's RBI infield single.

The Bears scored their final two runs in the third on Tameron Sealey's RBI single and Mizelle's sacrifice fly.

For Lander, Corbett went 2-for-3, while Brittney Sheriff (1-for-2) and Hartley (1-for-3) both doubled.

For L-R, Carpenter went 2-for-3 with one double and Mizelle batted 1-for-2 with one double. Sealey was 2-for-3.

In the second game, Jessica Felmeth's sacrifice fly in the eighth inning plated Carpenter and gave the Bears the 2-1 win.

Lander took a 1-0 lead in the third inning, when, with bases loaded and one out, Arielle Buchholz scored on Jaime Presnell's sacrifice fly to left field.

The Bears' Brittany Coursen tied the game at 1-1 in the fifth with a solo home run over the right field wall.

L-R's Millwood (15-4) picked up her second win of the day on the mound when she struck out two, walked two and allowed just one hit in 3.1 innings of relief.

Lander's Hayley Leissner (8-8) took the loss with six strikeouts, three walks and one earned run on six hits in the complete eight innings.
