DECATUR, Ala. – The Lander softball team dropped its first two games of the Ringor Charger Chillout Invitational Friday afternoon at Wilson Morgan Park. The Bearcats lost its opener to Barry University, 2-0, then fell to Florida Tech, 3-0. The invitational is being hosted by the University of Alabama-Huntsville.
The Bearcats drop to 6-4 on the season. Because of the threat of inclement weather on Saturday, all games have been moved up two hours. Lander will play the University of Indianapolis at 8:30 a.m., and Ohio Dominican at 10:30. On Sunday, the Bearcats face Southern Indiana at 1 p.m., followed by Missouri-St. Louis at 3.
In the first game, Barry's Paula Mackin (2-0) earned the win as she struck out four and allowed four hits.
Lander's Amanda Hamby (0-2) took the loss with one strikeout, two walks and two earned runs on six hits in five complete innings.
Barry (8-2) took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Amber Durkin reached on a bunt single, advanced to second on Cassy Zamora's sacrifice bunt, stole third, then scored on Natalia Ojeda's RBI single down the left field line.
With bases loaded and no outs in the third, the Buccaneers made it 2-0 when Alyssa Goldsmith went home on Mackin's sacrifice fly.
For Lander, Jaime Presnell (1-for-3) and Alyssa Hartley (1-for-2) both doubled.
For Barry, Sarah Broeseker batted 2-for-3.
In the second game, Florida Tech's Taylor Smith (1-4) was awarded the win after striking out four and allowing six hits.
Lander's Hayley Leissner (5-1) was tagged with her first loss of the season as she struck out five and allowed three earned runs on seven hits in six innings pitched.
Kara Dickinson gave Florida Tech a 1-0 lead in the fourth when she doubled to right center, advanced to third on a passed ball, and scored on Lauren Coles' RBI single.
The Panthers stretched the lead to 3-0 in the fifth on back-to-back RBI doubles by Brianna Barth and Kara Dickinson.
For Lander, Chasity Davis went 1-for-3 with one double.
For Florida Tech, Barth batted 1-for-3 with one double and Dickinson went 2-for-3 with one double.
