GREENWOOD – The Lander softball team earned its second doubleheader sweep of the season Sunday afternoon when the Bearcats defeated Limestone College, 4-1 and 3-0, in non-conference action at Doug Spears field.
Lander improves to 5-1 overall, while Limestone kicks off the season at 0-2.
In the first game, Hayley Leissner (4-0) earned the win with eight strikeouts, while giving up one earned run on six hits in the complete seven innings.
Limestone's Shelby Webb (0-1) took the loss after striking out four, walking one and allowing two earned runs on five hits in five innings pitched.
Jaime Presnell gave Lander a 2-0 lead in the first when she belted a two-run homer over the left field fence, scoring Brittney Sheriff, who reached on a double.
Lander took advantage of two fielding errors in the second inning and stretched its lead to 4-0 when Alyssa Hartley and Arielle Buchholz scored.
With bases loaded and no outs in the fourth, Limestone cut the Lander lead to 4-1 on Caroline Childers' RBI single. Leissner struck out three to end the inning.
For Lander, Buchholz went 2-for-3.
For Limestone, Childers batted 2-for-3.
In the second game, Lander scored all three of its runs in the fifth inning. Taylor Donson's RBI double plated pinch runner Sarah Fuller, Melanie Davis went home on Presnell's sacrifice bunt and Chasity Davis' RBI single sent Donson home.
Lander's Mary Katherine Pegram (1-0) was awarded the win after striking out three and allowing just three hits in seven complete innings.
Limestone's Leah Quant (0-1) took the loss as she struck out five, walked one and allowed three earned runs on eight hits in five innings pitched.
For Lander, Donson batted 2-for-3 with one double and Hartley went 2-for-3.
For Limestone, Jordan Smith (1-3) doubled.
