NEWBERRY – The No. 11-ranked Lander men's tennis team scored its first shutout of the season Wednesday afternoon when the Bearcats opened the season with a 9-0 non-conference victory over Newberry College.

In singles, No. 1 Paul-Henri Arrigoni (LU) def. Michael Saunders (N), 6-3, 6-4; No. 2 Adam Jonsson (LU) def. Vinicius Botelho (N), 6-3, 6-3; No. 3 Samuel Poutignat (LU) def. Mohammed Chakir (N), 6-0, 6-0; No. 4 Oscar Axelsson (LU) def. Carl Loveridge (N), 6-2, 6-3; No. 5 Diego Zegarra (LU) def. Carlos Nicolopulos (N), 6-4, 6-0; and No. 6 Maxime Desmars (LU) def. Jeffery Kiser (N), 6-0, 6-2.

In doubles, No. 1 Axelsson/Jonsson (LU) def. Saunders/Botelho (N), 8-2; No. 2 Poutignat/Desmars (LU) def. Chakir/Loveridge (N), 8-5; and No. 3 Arrigoni/Klemenz (LU) def. Kiser/Nicolopulos, 8-4.
