Box Score GREENWOOD – Wingate University's Sarah Wollett drove the lane and scored the game-winning basket with 3.7 seconds remaining Saturday afternoon to give the Bulldogs a 57-56 non-conference victory over No. 20 Lander at Horne Arena.
Wingate improves to 3-1 overall, while Lander drops to 0-2.
Lander's Precious Elkins led all scorers with a game-high 19 points, while Aarika Judge added 13 points and eight six assists for the Lady Bearcats. McKale Hardy led Lander in rebounds with eight.
Janitsha Williams led Wingate with 15 points and eight rebounds, while Chantal Dunbar added 14 points and 10 rebounds, and Wollett 11 points.
Wingate, which led 25-24 at halftime, connected on 22-of-56 field goals for 39.3 percent, including 4-of-11 threes for 36.4 percent. The Bulldogs sank 9-of-22 free throws for 40.9 percent.
Lander made 20-of-59 floor shots for 33.9 percent, including 2-of-14 three pointers for 14.3 percent. The Lady Bearcats were 14-of-19 from the foul line for 73.7 percent.
Leading 12-4 with 12:50 remaining in the first half, Lander suffered through a nearly seven-minute scoring drought as the Bulldogs went up 14-12 on Morgan McGee's jumper at 6:10.
Lander tied the game at 14-14 on a Judge layup and stretched its lead to 22-17 on a drive by Ariel Parker with 3:07 remaining in the half.
Brooklyn Boston's jumper at 2:03 tied the game at 22-all for the Bulldogs, then Boston gave her team a 25-24 halftime lead with a layup with 26 seconds left.
The Lady Bearcats rallied early in the second half to take a 30-25 lead on a pair of Jade Forest free throws at 18:15 and kept the lead until 9:46 when Dunbar's goal gave the Bulldogs a 41-40 lead with 9:46 left.
Two ties and six lead changes later, Wingate went up 47-46 on a Williams jumper and stretched the lead to 51-46 on another two pointer by Williams at 3:10.
After Wollett's free throw at 1:29 gave Wingate a 55-49 advantage, Lander rallied behind an Elkins three-point play, a Judge layup and two more Elkins free throws to take a 56-55 lead with 29 seconds left.
