AUGUSTINE, Fla. - The sixth-seeded Lander volleyball team advanced to Saturday's Peach Belt Conference Tournament semifinals when it upset third-seeded USC Aiken, 3-1, Friday afternoon in the quarterfinal round at Flagler College. Lander improves to 15-16 overall and will face the winner of No. 2 Flagler/No. 7 Francis Marion at 2 p.m., Saturday. The championship game is set for 2 p.m., Sunday.
USC Aiken drops to 18-13 and must now wait to see if it earns an at-large berth into the Southeast Regional Tournament.
The tournament victory is the third for the Bearcats in their 15-year history. Lander defeated Augusta State, 3-0, in the 2007 semifinals after receiving a first-round bye, then downed the Jaguars again, 3-2, in a first-round match in 2009.
Tarryn Angermeier totaled 19 kills and eight total blocks for the Bearcats, while Kaitlyn Harrison added 10 kills and 15 digs and Jessica Register 40 assists and 17 digs. Madison Kubal led Lander in digs with 25, while Katelyn Kraft added 15 and Sarah Bradley 10.
USCA was led by Leah Rogers (21 kills), Ashley Diedrich (13 kills, 32 digs), Ashley Farwell (24 assists, 12 digs), Sheila Walsh (28 assists), Samantha Lukralle (34 digs), and Shannon Byers (29 digs).
The win gives Lander a 2-1 edge over USC Aiken this season. The Bearcats downed the Pacers, 3-2, in an Oct. 10 match at Horne Arena, then fell to USCA, 3-0, in Aiken on Nov. 7.
