Box Score GREENWOOD - The No. 6-ranked and top-seeded Lander men's soccer team suffered an early exit from the Peach Belt Conference Tournament Tuesday night when eighth-seeded USC Aiken rallied after a 1-1 tie to upset the Bearcats, 4-3, in a shootout in a first-round game at the Jeff May Complex.
USC Aiken, which moves to 6-5-5 overall, advances to the PBC semifinal round to play the No. 4 Young Harris/No. 5 UNC Pembroke winner at 7:30 p.m., Friday, at Blanchard Woods Park in Evans, Ga.
Lander is 12-2-2 overall and must wait to see if it earns a berth in the national tournament.
During regulation play, Lander took a 1-0 lead on Brett Jankouskas' unassisted goal at 14:30, only to have USCA come back and tie it at 1-1 on Noel Mais' score at 36:12.
The Pacer outscored Lander, 4-3, in the shootout getting successful kicks from Chenedu Arinze, Mark Hanlon, Tobias Haenschke and Scott Newby.
Lander's Chris Hobbs, Jankouskas and Kevin Durand made their kicks.
For the game, Lander outshot USCA, 28-12, and led in corner kicks, 12-5.
USCA goalkeeper Brandon Jarosz had seven saves, while Lander's Barrett Nielsen totaled 3.
