Lyons scores 35 points as Lady Bearcats beat Flagler

Box Score

GREENWOOD – Ciara Lyons had perhaps one of the best halves in Lander women's basketball history Wednesday night, while Keondra Barnes and Kaylyn Small also had big games as the Lady Bearcats rolled to a 92-66 Peach Belt Conference victory over Flagler College at Horne Arena.

Lyons scored 25 points in the first half on 10-of-11 shooting from the floor and five of five free throws, and also had six rebounds, four assists and two steals before halftime.

Lander, playing its first home game since Dec. 10, improved to 8-3 overall and 3-0 in the Peach Belt. Flagler fell to 1-10, 0-5.

The Lady Bearcats used a 32-4 run in the first half to blow the game open.

Lyons finished with a career-high 35 points. The senior guard finished 12-of-16 from the floor and 11-of-12 from the line while adding eight assists and seven rebounds.

Small was perfect from the floor until missing her final shot late, finishing with 16 points on seven of eight shooting. The senior was two points shy of her career high of 18 points versus Augusta State Feb. 6, 2010. Small also had seven rebounds.

Barnes added 14 points and eight rebounds. She tied her career high of 14 points accomplished as a freshman Nov. 25, 2008, versus North Greenville.

Lyons, Small and Barnes scored 65 of Lander's 92 points. Lyons easily beat her previous career high of 27 points set Jan. 6, 2010 versus Francis Marion.

Jasmine Judge added eight points and five steals for the Lady Bearcats, while Ashley Watts contributed five assists.

Charlsea Owen led the Saints with 14 points, Marie Taylor scored 13 points, and Shakia Roche, Latesha Johnson and Treva Mason added eight points apiece. Johnson led Flagler with seven rebounds and five assists, while Taye'lor Trotter had four steals.

Lander made 32 of 63 shots from the floor (51 percent), 25 of 35 free throws (71 percent) and three of 13 from 3-point range (23 percent) while outrebounding the Saints 42-39.

The Lady Bearcats forced 31 Flagler turnovers.

The Saints made 21 of 58 shots (36 percent), 21 of 30 free throws (70 percent) and three of nine from behind the arc (33 percent).

After Owen scored five points to help stake Flagler to a 7-4 lead with 17:14 left in the first half, the Saints didn't score again for another five minutes as Lander ran off 15 unanswered points as part of a 32-4 run.

Lyons scored 11 of those 15 points, including a put-back of Judge's missed 3-pointer to give the Lady Bearcats their first lead at 8-7. After Barnes blocked a Flagler shot, Lyons converted on the other end with a driving layup, was fouled, and completed a three-point play. Lyons also scored the next four points to finish the 15-0 run, giving the Lady Bearcats a 19-7 lead.

Mason's two free throws ended Lander's run as well as Flagler's five-minute scoring drought. But the Lady Bearcats responded with a Judge 3-pointer and two more Lyons baskets for a 27-10 advantage.

After a Saints free throw, Lyons went back to work, throwing a long pass to Watts for a layup and three-point play, and Lyons scored twice more giving her 19 points already on 9-of-9 shooting with eight minutes still left in the first half.

After Rachelle Rasley scored on a tip-in to give Lander a 34-11 lead, Flagler scored its first field goal in 10 minutes when Mason rebounded Taylor's missed free throw (after she made the first) and hit a layup. The Saints ended an 0-for-8 slump from the floor and still trailed 34-14 with 7:32 to go.

Lyons became 10-for-10 from the floor with another layup at the 4:39 mark, and teammate Kami Phillips hit one of two free throws as the Lady Bearcats doubled their lead to 42-21 with 3:42 left.

At the 2:05 mark, Lyons finally had her first missed shot.

Lyons hit four free throws in the final minute to finish the first half with 25 points. The Lady Bearcats led 48-26 at halftime.

One minute into the second half, Lyons got a back-court steal, made the layup, was fouled, and converted the three-point play to give her a new career high of 28 points.

Judge followed with a steal and layup, and Barnes hit a jumper in the paint to give Lander a 57-28 lead at the 17:50 mark.

Lyons hit the 30-point mark on a pair of free throws with 17 minutes left.

Phillips stepped up over the next few possessions, passing to Lyons for a layup as she and Flagler both had 32 points at the 16-minute mark of the second half. Then Phillips sent a no-look pass inside to Barnes for a layup, and scored herself on a layup to make it 67-32 with 15 minutes to go.

Flagler went on a 10-0 run, holding Lander scoreless for more than three minutes. Trotter and Taylor hit jump shots, Taylor added two free throws, Shakia Roche scored in the paint, and Jen Knurek made two free throws to pull the Saints within 67-42 with under 11 minutes to go.

After Mukia Myrick, Phillips and Barnes made five of six free throws for the Lady Bearcats, Small scored in the paint to restore the 30-point lead at 74-44 halfway through the second half.

Lyons took her first shot in seven minutes, and missed, but Small's put-back made it 79-49 with eight minutes to go.

But the Saints played with pride and put together another run, pulling within 19 points, 80-61, with 3:37 left on a 12-1 run. Taylor scored eight of the points with two baskets and four free throws.

Small hit a pair of free throws and Judge, the Peach Belt's all-time leading 3-point shooter, hit just her second trey at the 2:31 left for an 85-61 lead. Myrick hit a 3-pointer from the top of the key with 29 seconds left to close the scoring.
