GREENWOOD - Chris Hobbs scored the lone goal of the game Saturday afternoon to lead the Lander men's soccer team to a 1-0 upset against No. 7-ranked Clayton State in a Peach Belt Conference game at the Jeff May Complex.
In the PBC opener for both teams, Lander improves to 3-1-1 overall and 1-0 in the PBC, while Clayton drops to 4-2, 0-1.
Hobbs raced up the left side of the field and popped the ball in from 10 yards at 14:02 on an assist from Fred Parker.
It was only last year that Clayton State kept Lander from winning the PBC regular-season title outright when the Lakers downed the Bearcats, 1-0, at Morrow, Ga. Both teams ended the season with 7-1 PBC records.
Lander now leads the all-time series against Clayton State, 12-7-3.
The Lakers outshot Lander, 12-5, and led in corner kicks, 10-4.
Lander goalkeeper Scott Playle earned the shutout with seven saves, while Clayton State goalie Brian Garcia tallied two.
