GREENWOOD – Lander's Hayley Leissner recorded 15 strikeouts for a 2-1 win in game one of a non-conference doubleheader against North Greenville, and the Bearcats took the second, 8-0, in five innings Friday afternoon at Doug Spears Field.
Lander improves to 16-11 overall, while North Greenville drops to 6-14.
Leissner (9-6) gave up just three hits in the seven-inning, complete-game victory.
North Greenville's Taylor Roof (4-7) took the loss as she struck out three, walked three and allowed one earned run on four hits in six innings pitched.
The Bearcats took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Arielle Buchholz singled, advanced to second on a groundout, to third on Chasity Davis' single and scored on a North Greenville error.
Marielena Santos, who reached on a single, tied the game at 1-1 in the third after going home on a Lander error.
Lander scored what proved to be the winning run in the bottom of the third when Taylor Donson walked, stole second, advanced to third on a groundout, and scored on Alyssa Hartley's RBI single to centerfield .
In the second game, Lander scored three runs in the first inning and five more in the fourth. The game was called due to the eight-run rule.
M.K. Pegram (4-3) was awarded the win after striking out six, walking two and allowing two hits in five shutout innings.
North Greenville's Laura Hopper (1-3) suffered the loss as she struck out three, walked one and allowed six earned runs on five hits in 3.2 innings.
The Bearcats took a quick 3-0 lead in the first when Brittany Sheriff scored on Donson's groundout and Rachelle Adkins blasted a two-run homer, her second of the season, over the left field fence.
In the five-run fourth, Casey Corbitt's RBI single to center field plated Sarah Fuller and Jaime Presnell, Buchholz's RBI single to the pitcher scored Corbitt, and Donson's RBI triple sent Sheriff and Buchholz across the plate.
For Lander, Adkins went 2-for-2 with the homer and Donson batted 1-for-3 with one triple and three RBI.
The Bearcats will host Flagler College at 12 p.m., Sunday, in a Peach Belt Conference game at Doug Spears Field.
