MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. - The Lander softball team claimed its first Peach Belt Conference game of the season Tuesday afternoon when the Bearcats defeated Georgia College, 3-1, in the second game of a doubleheader at the Peeler Complex. Georgia College won the first game, 4-3.
Lander moves to 10-8 overall and 1-3 in the PBC, while Georgia College is 6-18, 2-2.
The Bearcats broke a 1-1 tie in the fifth inning when they scored what proved to be the winning runs when Sarah Fuller scored an unearned run on an error by the GCSU catcher then Treasure Bane went home on a bases-loaded walk.
Lander took a 1-0 lead in the third on Taylor Donson's RBI triple that plated Brittney Sheriff.
The Bobcats tied the game at 1-1 in the fourth on Lindsey Conway's sacrifice bunt.
Amanda Hamby (3-1) earned the win after allowing just one earned run on four hits in four innings pitched. Hayley Leissner earned her third save of the year with four strikeouts and one walk in three innings pitched.
Georgia College's Sabrina Chandler (3-7) took the loss, striking out six, walking three and allowing one earned run on four hits in the complete seven innings.
For Lander, Fuller went 2-for-3.
In the first game, Lander took a 1-0 advantage in the first when Casey Corbitt scored on a bases-loaded hit by pitch. Georgia College tied the game in the bottom of the inning on Haley Burnett's RBI single.
The Bearcats added another run in the second when Sheriff's RBI single scored Jaime Presnell.
But GCSU came back in the fifth to tie the game at 2-all on Burnett's RBI single.
Sheriff's RBI single that sent Presnell home gave the Bearcats the lead again at 3-2, but the Bobcats came right in the bottom of the inning to win the game on Burnett's two-RBI single down the left field line.
Burnett (1-5) earned the win for Georgia College as she struck out five, walked six and allowed three earned runs on six hits in the complete seven innings.
Lander's Leissner (4-4) took the loss after striking out six, walking four and allowing two earned runs on eight hits in six innings pitched.
For Lander, Sheriff went 2-for-4 with two RBI.
