JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - The Lander softball team dropped a non-conference doubleheader at Carson-Newman Saturday afternoon as the Eagles won the first game, 5-1, and took the second, 10-3.
Lander drops to 9-7 overall, while Carson-Newman improves to 11-6-1.
In the first game, Hayley Leissner (4-4) took the loss as she struck out nine, walked one and allowed five earned runs on 14 hits in six innings pitched.
Carson-Newman's Mary Shealy (7-4) earned the win with five strikeouts, one walk and one earned run on seven hits.
Lander took a 1-0 lead in the first when Taylor Donson doubled and later stole home.
The Eagles tied the game at 1-1 on when Kim Whaley scored from third on a wild pitch.
Carson-Newman took a 3-1 lead in the fourth on Whaley's solo home run and Amber Hewitt's RBI single.
The Eagles scored one run each in the fifth and sixth innings on an RBI singles by Sara Kelley and Whitney Kee.
For Lander, Rachelle Adkins (2-for-3) and Donson (1-for-2) both doubled.
In the second game, Amanda Hamby (2-2) suffered the loss for Lander as she struck out one and allowed three earned runs on four hits in one inning.
Carson-Newman's Shealy (8-4) earned her second win of the day with six strikeouts, one walk and three earned runs on six hits in the complete seven innings.
Lander took a 1-0 lead in the first on Donson's RBI single, but Carson-Newman came right back in the bottom of the inning to take a 3-1 advantage when Amber Hewitt homered, Caitlyn Lance had a sacrifice fly and Whaley had an RBI single.
Carson Newman added three more runs in both the second and third innings and the final run in the fourth.
In the second inning Hewitt had a two RBI double and Shoemake an RBI double, while Kelley had an RBI single in the fourth to go along with Leah Price's two-RBI single.
