AIKEN, S.C. - The Lander softball team saw its four-game winning streak come to an end Tuesday afternoon as the Bearcats fell to USC Aiken in their season-opening Peach Belt Conference series, 5-0 and 4-3.
Lander drops to 9-5 overall and 0-2 in the PBC, while USC Aiken improves to 9-1, 2-0.\
In the first game, USCA's India Kornegay (4-0) earned the win with 16 strikeouts and three walks in the two-hit shutout.
Lander's Amanda Hamby (2-1) took the loss as she allowed five earned runs on 11 hits in six innings pitched.
USCA took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on Lauren Locklear's two run homer, then stretched the margin to 4-0 in the third on another two-run homer by Locklear.
The Pacers final run came in the fifth when Kelley King's RBI single plated Whitney Clary.
In the second game, Samantha Lemm (1-0) earned the win in two innings of work, while Kornegay notched her first save of the season.
Lander's Hayley Leissner (4-3) was tagged the losing pitcher after striking out four, walking two and allowing three earned runs on nine hits in six innings pitched.
The Pacers took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on Lindsey Jones' RBI single.
Lander came back to take a 2-1 lead in the third when Casey Corbitt scored on an error and Taylor Donson's RBI single plated Arielle Buchholz.
