GREENWOOD - The No. 16-ranked Lander men's tennis team opened the 2011 season Tuesday afternoon with a 7-1 non-conference victory over Newberry College at The Joe Cabri Courts.

Newberry falls to 0-1 with the loss.

In singles, No. 1 Paul-Henri Arrigoni (LU) def. Michael Saunders, 6-0, 6-3; No. 2 Vinicius Botelho (NC) def. Henrik Willers, 5-7, 6-4, 10-6; No. 3 Carlos Marques (LU) def. Mohammed Chakir, 6-0, 6-3; No. 4 Oscar Axelsson (LU) def. Davis Sons, 6-0, 6-0; No. 5 Oscar Perman (LU) def. Joel Hicks, 6-1, 6-0; and No. 6 Christopher Mattsson (LU) and Jeffery Kiser (NC) was halted due to rain with Mattsson leading 6-0, 3-0.

In doubles, No. 1 Perman/Willers (LU) def. Botelho/Sons, 8-2; No. 2 Arrigoni/Axelsson (LU) def. Saunders/Chakir, 8-2; and No. 3 Marques/Mattsson (LU) def. Kiser/Bethea, 8-0.
