COLUMBUS, Ga. - The No. 14 Lander men's tennis team ended its season Friday afternoon when the Bearcats lost to No. 12 Georgia College & State University, 5-1, in the semifinal round of the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional tournament hosted by Columbus State University at the Blackmon Tennis Center.
GCSU improves to 16-6, while Lander moves to 16-7.
Lander scored its only point of the match when the No. 3 doubles team of Carlos Marques/Gary Bertoldo defeated Johan Wadstein/Leo Bernardes, 9-8. In the other doubles matches, No. 1 Jerome Leborgne/Joao Casagrande (GCSU) def. Christopher Mattsson/Pierre Frances (L), 8-6; and No. 2 Giovane Nucci/Max Beliankou (GCSU) def. Paul-Henri Arrigoni/Juan Manrique (L), 8-5.
GCSU clinched the victory by winning three singles matches. No. 3 Max Beliankou (GCSU) def. Christopher Mattsson (L), 6-4, 6-1; No. 4 Leo Bernardes (GCSU) def. Pierre Frances (L), 6-0, 6-2; and No. 6 Joao Casa Grande (GCSU) def. John Cappabianca (L), 6-4, 6-3.
GCSU will face Columbus State at 1 p.m. Saturday in the regional championship game with the winner earning a berth in next week's 16-team national championship tournament at Sanlando Tennis Park in Altamonte Springs, Fla.
