MISENHEIMER, N.C. - Less than 18 hours after defeating Erskine College in a five-hour, 12-inning marathon game on their home field, the Lander baseball team suffered a 6-4 non-conference defeat against Pfeiffer University Tuesday afternoon at Joe Ferebee Field.
Pfeiffer improves to 22-23, while Lander slips to 20-15.
Pfeiffer's John McDaniel (5-4) was awarded the win, striking out seven, walking two and allowing three earned runs on five hits in six innings pitched. Lander's Brandon Farquhar (5-2) suffered the loss after he struck out one and allowed five earned runs on 11 hits in five innings pitched.
Lander took a 2-0 lead in the first inning when Robert Skinner's RBI double plated Jordan Owens, followed by Pete Hernandez's single, which scored Skinner.
Pfeiffer trimmed the lead to 2-1 in the bottom of the inning when Myles Pearl scored on a groundout, but the Bearcats made it 3-1 in the third after Skinner scored for the second time on Hernandez's RBI double.
Pfeiffer added a run in the fourth on Eric Shoemaker's RBI single, then the Falcons took a 5-3 lead in the sixth on Shoemaker's three-run homer.
Lander cut the lead to 5-4 in the eighth when Alan Abreu's RBI double scored Hernandez, who reached on a double, but the Falcons' Will Davis scored on a wild pitch to extend Pfeiffer's lead to 6-4 later in the inning.
For Lander, Hernandez went 3-for-5 with one run and two RBI, while Owens batted 2-for-5 with one run.
For Pfeiffer, Zack Pou went 3-for-4, while Davis, Josh Strickland and Shoemaker recorded two hits each.
