MORROW, Ga. - The No. 1-ranked Armstrong Atlantic State University women's tennis team defeated Lander, 5-0, Friday afternoon in the first round of the Peach Belt Conference tournament hosted by Clayton State University.
AASU improves to 25-0 overall, while Lander drops to 12-10.
In doubles play, No. 1 Martina Beckmann/Alida Muller-Wehlau (AASU) def. Aurelia Ruffat/Ana Luiza Zaia (L), 8-1; No. 2 Gabriella Kovacs/Sona Novakova (AASU) def. Brandi Cordell/Eliza Adusumilli (L), 8-0; and No. 3 Kathleen Henry/Alisa Kagukina (AASU) def. Caitlin Fell/Nicola James (L), 8-0.
Armstrong Atlantic needed just two singles wins to seal the victory and advance to the semifinals. The Lady Pirates won at No. 1 singles when Novakova defeated Ruffat, 6-0, 6-0, then clinched the win at No. 6 where Kagukina def. Melanise Newbold, 6-0, 6-0.
