DAHLONEGA, Ga. – Just one day after sweeping Columbus State and earning a berth into this weekend’s Peach Belt Conference tournament, the Lander softball team traveled to North Georgia on Wednesday to face the top-ranked and undefeated Lady Saints in the Bearcats regular-season finale. North Georgia improved to 41-0 as the Saints swept Lander, 8-0 and 9-0.
NGCSU finished the season 20-0 in the PBC, while Lander heads to the PBC tournament 22-22 overall and 8-12 in the PBC.
In the first game, North Georgia’s Sarah Phillips (33-0) collected the win as she struck out four, walked one and held Lander to just one hit in five complete innings.
Lander’s Amanda Hamby (2-6) took the loss after allowing five earned runs on six hits in 3.1 innings pitched.
Casey Corbitt doubled for Lander’s lone hit.
For North Georgia, Laura Voyles went 3-for-3, with one triple, one double, two runs and two RBI. Courtney McGuire (1-for-3, one run, one RBI), Leslee Smith (1-for-2, two RBI), Hilary Cox (1-for-2, one run, one RBI), Katherine Martin (1-for-3, one RBI), Jessica Skeels (1-for-2, one run) and Natasha Willemse (1-for-2, one run, one RBI) all doubled.
In the second game, McGuire had a two-run homer in the first inning, Skeels had a two-run shot and Willemse a solo in the second inning, and the Lady Saints added five more runs in the fourth on RBI singles by Willemse, Knight and a two-RBI double by Smith.
Rachelle Adkins had Lander's lone hit.
NGCSU's Phillips earned her second victory of the night, striking out three in five innings pitched.
Lander's Shelbey Spencer (4-12) suffered the loss as she allowed five earned runs on four hits in 1.1 innings pitched.
