GREENWOOD – Lander’s Hayley Leissner and Shelbey Spencer combined for a two-hit shutout in the first game of a Peach Belt Conference softball doubleheader sweep against Georgia Southwestern Saturday afternoon at Doug Spears Field. Lander won the first game, 1-0, and dropped the second, 3-1. (Game 1 Boxscore | Game 2 Boxscore)
Lander moves to 15-17 overall and 3-7 in the PBC, while GSW is 15-28, 3-13.
In the first game, Leissner (10-3) earned the win as she struck out five, walked two and allowed one hit in five innings. Spencer struck out three, walked two and allowed one hit in two innings.
GSW’s Mariko Nomura (5-16) suffered the loss, striking out six, walking two and allowing one earned run on five hits in six innings of work.
Lander scored the game’s lone run in the fifth when Rachelle Adkins singled to centerfield and pinch runner Natalie Batson later scored on Brittney Sheriff’s sacrifice fly.
In the second game, Natalie Smith’s RBI double plated Brittany Sheriff to give Lander a 1-0 lead in the first.
But GSW’s Katie Wooten smacked a game-winning, three-run homer over the left center fence in the fourth to give the Hurricanes all the scoring they would need.
The Hurricanes’ Jessica Martin (3-9) went the distance in earning the win as she struck out 10, walked one and allowed one earned run on six hits in seven innings.
Lander’s Spencer (3-9) took the loss, striking out eight, walking two and allowing three earned runs on just two hits in four innings. Leissner struck out five and allowed one hit in three innings of relief.
Blair Hammonds went 2-for-3 for the Bearcats.
