NEWBERRY - The Lander softball team evened its record at 5-5 Saturday afternoon when the Bearcats split a non-conference doubleheader at Newberry College, losing the first game, 3-0, then winning the second, 1-0. (Game 1 Box | Game 2 Box)
Newberry moves to 2-2 overall.
In the first game, Newberry's Amanda Huckstein (2-0) earned the win as she struck out six and allowed three hits in the complete seven innings.
Lander's Shelbey Spencer (2-2) took the loss as she struck out two, walked two and allowed one earned run on four hits in two innings pitched.
Newberry took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on Huckstein's RBI single. The Indians added the other two runs in the second inning when Tiffany Pigage scored on an error and Sara Powell's RBI single plated Aissa Gatewood.
For Lander, Blair Hammonds batted 1-for-3 with one double.
In the second game, Lander's Hayley Leissner (3-2) earned the win as she struck out nine, walked two and allowed just two hits in seven complete innings.
Newberry's Shelley Jeffcoat (0-1) took the loss, striking out four, walking one and allowing one run on four hits in six innings pitched.
Lander scored the lone run of the game on Rachelle Adkins RBI single which plated Natalie Smith.
Marilyn Newman (1-for-3) and Brittney Sheriff (1-for-4) both doubled for Lander.
