No. 2 Lady Bearcats triumph over Georgia College

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. - The No. 2 Lander women's basketball team remained unbeaten Saturday afternoon when the Lady Bearcats defeated Georgia College, 83-67, in a Peach Belt Conference contest in the Centennial Center.

Lander improves to 8-0 overall and 3-0 in the PBC, while GCSU (5-1, 0-1) suffers its first loss of the season.

Jasmine Judge led the Lander attack with a game-high 24 points on 8-of-16 three-point attempts. Shannon McKever, who had a double-double in the first half with 14 points and 11 rebounds, finished the game with 21 points and 15 rebounds. Tasheba Butler added 11 points and eight rebounds, while Nardia Robbins had six points and eight assists.

Chimere Jordan led GCSU with 20 points and nine rebounds, while Tammeisha Law netted 12 points and Dominique Huffin 10. Karisma Boykin added nine points and 10 rebounds in the loss.

Lander kicked the game off with an 8-2 run in the first three minutes on two baskets by McKever and one each by Butler and Robbins.

After GCSU cut the lead to 13-10 at 16:31 on a Hughette Yanga layup at 14:04 layup, the Lady Bearcats extended the lead to 18-10 on a McKever layup at 13:19.

But again, GCSU rallied to cut the margin to 18-16 at 12:11 on four-point play by Jordan.

The Lady Bearcats responded with a 13-2 run to take a 31-18 lead on a Kaylyn Small layup with 8:46 left in the half.

GCSU made its way back in the game and cut the Lander lead to 31-27 with 5:32 left on a Law field goal, then Lander finished out the half with a 15-3 run and a 46-30 advantage.

Lander maintained a double-figure lead throughout the second half with as high as a 19-point lead on three occasions.

The Lady Bearcats connected on 31-of-69 field goals for 44.9 percent, including 12-of-29 threes for 41.4 percent. Lander was 9-of-17 from the free throw line for 52.9 percent.

GCSU was 27-of-63 from the floor for 42.9 percent, including 6-of-20 threes for 30 percent. The Lady Bobcats made 7-of-10 foul shots for 70 percent.
