MORROW, Ga. - The Lander women's soccer team won its regular-season finale Saturday evening when the Lady Bearcats defeated Clayton State, 4-1, in a Peach Belt Conference contest.
Lander, 9-6-1 overall and 4-5-1 in the PBC, will be the seventh-seed in next week's PBC tournament and will play a first round game at 7 p.m., Tuesday, at No. 2 Columbus State. The Columbus/Lander winner will face the No. 3 UNC Pembroke/No. 6 Montevallo winner at 5 p.m. Friday, Nov. 5, in the semifinals at Blanchard Woods in Evans, Ga. The championship game is set for 1 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 7 at Blanchard Woods.
Clayton State drops to 6-11 overall and 3-7 in the PBC.
Lander took a quick 1-0 lead when Jamie Shaw scored on an assist from Ashton Tatum just 4:25 into the game.
Clayton State bounced right back to tie the game at 1-1 at 10:17 when Luisa Alvarez scored from the top of the penalty box.
Sam Vickers scored what proved to be the game-winner for Lander at 21:58 when she nailed a shot from 25 yards out on a double-assist from Kendall Couch and Lara Middlebrook.
Carly Murray netted the third goal for the at 50:42 when she scored on a deflected shot and Middlebrook scored one minute later on an assist from Christina Barbour.
Lander outshot Clayton State, 20-6, and led in corner kicks, 7-3.
Clayton State goalkeeper Stefania Cola had seven saves and Lander's Katherine Baltz had two.
