GREENWOOD - The Lander volleyball team remained undefeated Tuesday night when the Bearcats defeated Newberry College, 3-1, in a non-conference game in Horne Arena. The game scores were: 25-22, 18-25, 29-27, and 25-19.
Lander improves to 6-0 overall, while Newberry slips to 5-4.
Magi Nottingham and Melissa McCracken each posted double-doubles to lead the Bearcats. Nottingham recorded 16 kills and 16 digs, while McCracken had 14 kills and 10 digs. Candace LaRocca added 47 assists and nine digs, while Lindsey Everhart had 11 kills, Ashley Ferry a game-high 36 digs, Chelsey Corgan 12 digs and Abbey Focht 11. Ferry led Lander with four service aces, while Nottingham, Focht and Corgan each had two.
Newberry's Fernanda Frey (16 kills, 18 digs), Kember Lichtie (12 kills, 13 digs), and Brianna Blakely (39 assists, 16 digs) also recorded double-doubles. Kara Harris added 23 digs, and Lindsey Hollingsworth 21. Blakely had a game-high five service aces and Harris added three.
Lander will travel to Savannah, Ga., this weekend to participate in the Chatham Orthopedics Pirate Volleyball Classic hosted by Armstrong Atlantic State University.
