GREENWOOD – Adam Arthur and Ivan Stoykov led the Lander Bearcats to a 5-2 non-conference men’s soccer victory over North Greenville University Wednesday night.
Arthur had two goals and one assist while Stoykov had one goal and two assists for Lander, which improved to 2-2 on the season. The Crusaders fell to 2-3.
Lander took a 1-0 lead 10 minutes into the game when Arthur received a long pass from Craig Hughes and drilled the ball over North Greenville goalkeeper Nick Williams’ head into the top center of the net.
The Crusaders tied the match in the 17th minute when Seth Snyder took advantage of a mistake by Bearcats goalkeeper Scott Playle, deflecting Playle’s errant pass into the left side of the net.
Lander regained the lead with 11:21 left in the half off Jamie Davison’s corner kick. Arthur deflected the direct kick back to Davison, whose cross went into the right corner of the goal.
Arthur scored again, giving the Bearcats a 3-1 lead five minutes into the second half when he rifled a shot from about 25 yards out from the left side off an assist from Ivan Stoykov.
North Greenville pulled within 3-2 with 20:23 left when Manuel Izquierdo rifled a long 40-plus yard shot that tailed into the corner of the net. Three minutes later, Izquierdo nailed a direct kick that Lander goalkeeper Jesse Garbowski made a diving save on.
The Bearcats put the game away in the final eight-plus minutes. Stoykov scored off an assist from K.C. Dunbaker at the 82:52 mark, and Aaron Brittain scored Lander’s fifth goal off an assist from Stoykov at 84:13.
The Bearcats out-shot North Greenville 23-14 and had a 6-3 edge in corner kicks.
