Limestone softball sweeps Lander in doubleheader

GREENWOOD – The Limestone softball team swept Lander in a non-conference doubleheader Friday, winning the first game, 2-0, and the nightcap, 6-5, at Doug Spears Field. (Game 1 Box | Game 2 Box)

Limestone improves to 18-23 overall, while Lander is 13-23.

In the first game, Limestone’s Madison Carpenter (3-2) earned the win as she struck out three, walked three and allowed five hits in 6.2 innings pitched. Lauren Robertson was awarded the save.

Lander’s Hayley Leissner (9-16) suffered the loss as she struck out nine, walked one and allowed two earned runs on seven hits in seven complete innings.

Limestone took a 2-0 lead in the third inning on RBI singles from Felicia Fritz and Kelsey Kuykendall.

Lander cut the margin to 2-1 in the seventh when Pam Stephenson scored on Sara Senn’s RBI single.

For Limestone, Jordan Goodman went 2-for-3. For Lander, Senn went 2-for-4.

In the second game, Carpenter (4-2) claimed her second win of the evening as she struck out five, walked one and allowed two earned runs on three hits in 4.2 innings.

Lander’s Leissner (9-17) took the loss in relief as she struck out six, walked one and allowed two earned runs on three hits in three innings pitched.

Fritz’s RBI single scored Jenna Guce to give the Saints a 1-0 lead in the first inning then Limestone stretched the lead to 2-0 in the second when Mallory Kuykendall crossed the plate from third on a failed pick off attempt at second.

Lander took a 3-2 lead in the fourth when Haley Foster stroked a solo homer and was followed by Nikki Brown’s two-run double.

Limestone tied the game at 3-3 in the fifth on when Robertson scored from third on a passed ball.

In the eighth inning, with the international tie-breaker in effect, Limestone went up 6-3 on Kelsey Kuykendall’s RBI single and Jordan Smith’s two-RBI single.

Lander cut the lead to 6-5 in the eighth on Daisy Stewart’s RBI double and Shelly Grimsley’s RBI single.

For Limestone, Guse went 3-for-3 with one run scored, while Smith went 2-for-4 with two RBI.

For Lander, Foster went 1-for-2 with one homer, while Stewart (2-for-4, two runs, one RBI) and Brown (1-for-2, two RBI) both doubled. Grimsley went 2-for-4 with one run and one RBI and Senn went 2-for-4.
