JONESBORO, Ga. - The second-seeded Columus State women's tennis team defeated seventh-seeded Lander, 5-0, Saturday and eliminated the Bearcats from the Peach Belt Conference tournament hosted by Clayton State University.
Columbus State improves to 20-2 overall and advances to Sunday's championship match, while Lander drops to 12-7 overall.
The Lady Cougars swept the three doubles matches to gain the early momentum. In the No. 1 match, CSU's Eva Petschnig and Lindsey Groenewald defeated Lander's team of Eliza Adsumilli and Nicola James, 8-0. Hana Toumi and Roxana Dondera downed Lander's Vuokko Vahatalo and Anni Pajunen, 8-1, at No. 2, while the No. 3 team of Daniela Castillo and Erin Reynolds downed Lander's Ana Luiza Zaia and Caitlin Fell, 8-3.
Columbus State wrapped up the semifinal victory with singles wins at No. 3 and No. 6. CSU's Toumi downed Vahatalo, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 3, while at No. 6 the Cougars Reynolds beat Lander's Zaia.
Lander will now wait to hear if they earn a berth in the NCAA tournament.
