Softball drops final regular-season DH to Augusta State

GREENWOOD – The Augusta State softball team scored a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader sweep Tuesday afternoon when the Jaguars defeated Lander, 7-1 and 3-1, in the regular-season finale at Doug Spears Field. (Game 1 Box | Game 2 Box)

ASU improves to 30-17 overall and 11-7 in the PBC, while Lander is 13-29, 2-16.

In the first game, Sarah Demuth (11-8) earned the win as she struck out two, walked two and allowed one earned run on two hits in five innings pitched.

Lander’s Hayley Leissner (9-21) took the loss as she struck out two, walked two and allowed six earned runs on six hits in three innings pitched.

Lander took a 1-0 lead in the third inning when Sara Senn scored on Lindsey Sammons’ RBI single.

Augusta State tied it at 1-1 in the fourth when Kacee Camp doubled to right center, then scored on  Demuth’s RBI single. In the fifth inning, the Jags took a 3-1 lead on Camps’ two-run single.

ASU added four runs in the sixth to make it 7-1. Kayla Hicks had an RBI single, Alyssa Pingree scored on a fielder’s choice, Hicks was plated on Angii Verbeelen’s sacrifice fly and Alysha Krier added an RBI double.

For ASU, Krier (1-for-3, one RBI) and Camp (2-for-4, one run scored, two RBI) both doubled.

For Lander, Natalie Smith batted 1-for-2 with one double.

In the second game, Emily Corish was awarded the win as she struck out three, walked one and allowed no runs on two hits in four innings pitched. Corish and Jennifer Miller, who earned the save, pitched a combined two-hitter.

Lander’s Leissner suffered the loss as she struck out four and allowed two earned runs on five hits in seven innings pitched.

ASU took a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning when Krier scored on a Lander throwing error and Kristen Jones’ sacrifice fly plated Camp. The Jags extended the lead to 3-0 in the fifth on Kayla Adams’ RBI single.

Lander’s lone run came in the fifth when Lindsey Traynham scored on an ASU error.

For the Jags, Krier batted 1-for-3 with one double, while Camp went 2-for-3.

Lander’s Daisy Stewart batted 1-for-3 with one double.
