GREENWOOD – The Columbus State softball team limited Lander to just one run Tuesday afternoon as the Cougars swept the Bearcats in a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader, 2-1 and 7-0, at Doug Spears Field. (Game 1 Box | Game 2 Box)
Columbus State improves to 24-23 overall and 8-6 in the PBC, while Lander moves to 13-21, 2-10.
In the first game, Kristin Bullard (11-11) earned the win as she struck out nine, walked one and allowed five hits in seven complete innings.
Lander’s Hayley Leissner (9-15) took the loss as she struck out eight, walked one and allowed one earned run on nine hits in seven innings.
The Cougars took a 2-0 lead in the fifth inning on RBI singles by Ginny Walsh and Sarah Moore. With bases loaded in the sixth, Lander cut the lead to 2-1 when Hayley Foster walked home.
For Columbus, Brittany Leverett went 1-for-2 with one double and one run scored, while Christie Thompson and Moore both went 2-for-4.
For Lander, Shelly Grimsley went 2-for-3.
In the second game, Britni McCall (5-5) earned the win as she struck out seven and allowed four hits in five innings pitched.
Lander’s Grimsley (0-3) suffered the loss as she allowed four earned runs on nine hits in four innings pitched.
Leverett’s two-run homer in the fourth got the Cougars going, then they stretched the lead to 4-0 in the fifth on Walsh’s two-RBI single. CSU made it 5-0 in the sixth on Katie Ellis’ solo home run. The Cougars scored their final two runs in the sixth on an RBI single by Ellis and a sacrifice fly by April Jowers.
For Columbus, Leverett and Ellis both went 2-for-4 with one home run and two RBI. Thompson went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and Walsh went 2-for-4 with two RBI.
For Lander, Sarah Senn and Nikki Brown both went 2-for-3.
