GREENWOOD - The Lander softball team won its second straight game Friday afternoon when the Bearcats defeated Erskine College, 6-4, in a non-conference game at Doug Spears Field. The second game of the scheduled doubleheader was cancelled because of the low temperatures.
The Bearcats improve to 12-16 overall, while Erskine drops to 14-12.
Erskine took the early 1-0 lead in the third inning on Kayla Vinson's RBI double.
Lander exploded for five runs in its half of the third. With bases loaded, Carrie Hudson and Sara Senn scored on a pair of Erskine errors, then Shelly Grimsley stroked a two-run double, followed by Aubrie Phillips' RBI single.
Erskine trimmed the lead to 5-3 in the fourth on another Vinson RBI double and made it 5-4 in the fifth when Courtney Davis scored on Melinda Bowman's groundout.
Lander scored its final run in the sixth on Natalie Smith's RBI single.
The Bearcats' Hayley Leissner (8-12) earned the win as she struck out 11, walked two and allowed three earned runs on 10 hits in seven complete innings.
For Lander, Hudson went 2-for-4 with one double, while Senn and Phillips both went 2-for-3.
Erskine's Amanda Norton (0-1) took the loss as she struck out three, walked one and allowed two earned runs on seven hits in three innings pitched.
Erskine's Vinson went 2-for-3 with two doubles and three RBI, while Kelly Davis went 2-for-4 with one double, Rebekah George went 2-for-4, and Courtney Davis 2-for-3.
