GREENWOOD - The Carson Newman softball team exploded for three big innings Sunday afternoon as the Lady Eagles swept Lander, 13-1 and 8-2, in a non-conference doubleheader at Doug Spears Field. (Game 1 Box | Game 2 Box)
Carson-Newman ups its record to 10-2 overall, while Lander moves to 8-8.
In the first game, Carson-Newman scored six runs in the opening inning and added five more in the fifth. The Eagles pounded out 11 hits in the victory. The game was called in the fifth inning due to the eight-run rule.
Stephanie Templeton (1-1) was awarded the victory as she struck out three, walked three and allowed one earned run on four hits in four innings pitched. Lander's Hayley Leissner (5-5) suffered the loss as she struck out two, walked one and allowed four earned runs on four hits in one inning pitched.
For Carson-Newman, Sarah Little went 1-for-3 with one home run, while Mary Shealy (1-for-3, two runs scored, three RBI), Amber Palmer (1-for-4, two runs, two RBI), and Kim Whaley (2-for-3, three RBI) all doubled. Whitney Kee went 2-for-3 with one run and one RBI.
For Lander, Natalie Smith went 1-for-1 with one RBI, while Bree Shirley, Lindsey Sammons and Nikki Brown also singled.
In the second game, the Eagles broke a 2-2 tie in the sixth inning then added four more in the seventh to complete the sweep.
Carson-Newman took a 1-0 advantage in the first on Shealy's RBI single.
Lander took the lead at 2-1 in the bottom of the inning when Sara Senn scored on a passed ball and Daisy Stewart crossed the plate on Smith's RBI single. The Eagles tied the game at 2-2 in the third when Jessie Howard scored on Little's RBI single.
The Eagles took the lead for good in the sixth when Shealy's RBI single scored Whitney Durham and Howard scored on a Lander error.
Shealy (8-1) recorded the victory on the mound, striking out two and allowing 10 hits in seven complete innings. Leissner (5-6) took the loss as she struck out seven, walked three and allowed six earned runs on 14 hits in seven complete innings.
For Carson-Newman, Shealy went 3-for-4 with one triple and five RBI and Whaley went 1-for-4 with one double and one run scored. Howard went 4-for-5 with four runs scored and Templeton went 2-for-3 with one RBI.
For Lander, Stewart went 2-for-4 with one double and one run scored, while Senn went 2-for-4 with one run, and Smith went 2-for-3 with one RBI.
