GREENWOOD - The Clayton State men's basketball team placed three players in double figures Saturday afternoon and defeated Lander, 63-46, in front of a homecoming crowd of 1,550, in a Peach Belt Conference matchup in Horne Arena.
Clayton State improves to 13-12 overall and 6-12 in the PBC, while Lander moves to 11-13, 7-11.
Bernard Fields led the Lakers with 11 points, while Ricky Garrett and Will Lewis netted 10 each. Brian Kelly grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds go go along with eight points and Eric Wilson had six assists.
For Lander, Dane Sparrow had 13 points and five rebounds, while Ford Lawrence scored 11 points and had four assists. Brenton Harris grabbed nine rebounds and Darius Johnson added eight.
The Lakers, who led 37-29 at halftime, were 22-of-50 from the field for 44 percent, including 5-of-16 three pointers for 31.3 percent. Clayton also made 14-of-15 free throws for 93.3 percent. Clayton edged Lander in the rebound battle, 35-33.
Lander connected on 18-of-53 field goals for 34 percent, including 7-of-28 three pointers for 25 percent. The Bearcat were 3-of-13 from the foul line for 23.1 percent.
Lander trimmed Clayton's second half led to 40-37 with 13:04 left in the game on a Lawrence three-pointer, but the Lakers countered with a 10-3 run to extend their advantage to 52-40 wth 9:42 remaining.
The Lakers, who held Lander to just six points in the final 10 minutes of the game, posted its largest lead at 18 points when Jonathan Austin's jumper made it 63-45 with 2:00 remaining.
In the first half, Clayton State eased out to its first double-digit lead when Garrett connected on two free throws with 4:53 left to give the Lakers a 29-19 advantage. The Lakers built its lead to 14 points, 35-21 with 3:18 remaining, before Lander went on an 8-2 run to end the half.
