BELMONT, N.C. - The Lander softball team improved to 8-6 overall Tuesday afternoon, when the Bearcats swept Belmont Abbey College in a non-conference doubleheader, 6-2 and 5-4. (Game 1 Box | Game 2 Box)
In the first game, Bailey Lee (1-1) earned the win, striking out four and allowing two earned runs on eight hits in seven complete innings.
Belmont Abbey's Kayla Short took the loss, striking out five, walking four and allowing three earned runs on eight hits in 6.2 innings. Belmont Abbey drops to 2-8 on the season.
Lander trimmed the Belmont Abbey lead to 2-1 in the fourth inning when Pam Stephenson scored on Haley Foster's RBI single. The Bearcats took a 3-2 lead in the fifth as Aubrie Phillips scored on Carrie Hudson's RBI single and Bree Shirley crossed the plate on Nikki Brown's RBI single.
Lander added three more runs in the sixth inning. when Lindsey Sammons scored on a wild pitch, Shelly Grimsley scored on Natalie Smith's RBI bunt and Aubrie Phillips went home on Shirley's RBI single.
For Lander, Smith went 1-for-4 with one double and one RBI and Hudson went 2-for-4 with one RBI.
In the second game, Lander rallied from a 4-3 deficit in the top of the seventh inning with two runs to claim the win. Foster doubled down the right field line to score McKenzie Watts and then she scored on Sammons' RBI single down the left field line.
Aerin Phillips (2-0) picked up the win as she walked three and allowed just one earned run on three hits in four innings pitched.
Belmont Abbey's Short took the loss, striking out one, and allowing two earned runs in just one inning pitched.
For Lander, Foster went 3-for-4 with two doubles, one run scored and two RBI; Hudson went 1-for-3 with one double and one RBI; and Brown went 2-for-4.
Trailing 2-0, Lander tied the game in the fourth when Natalie Batson scored on Foster's RBI double and Nikki Cumalander was plated on Sammons RBI single.
The Bearcats took a 3-2 lead in the fifth on Hudson's RBI double.
