GREENWOOD - Dane Sparrow and Ford Lawrence netted 17 points each Saturday afternoon to lead the Lander men's basketball team to a stunning 70-62 upset against No. 14 Georgia College & State University in a Peach Belt Conference contest in Horne Arena.

Lander improves to 10-11 overall and 6-9 in the PBC, while GCSU drops to 17-4, 11-4.

Sparrow made 6-of-9 from the field, including 4-of-5 from the three-point line, and 1-of-4 from the foul line to lead Lander. Lawrence connected on only 2-of-7 floor shots, but was 13-of-16 from the free throw line. Curtis Milner added 12 points and a team-high eight rebounds.

The Bobcats were led by Ty Rowland's 13 points. Martin Graham added 11 points and Justin Brown 10. Josh Hurst grabbed a team-high eight rebounds for GCSU.

The Bearcats, which trailed 35-32 at halftime, rallied early in the second half to take the lead at 43-42 on a pair of Lawrence free throws with 15:12 left in the game. GCSU came back with a three-pointer by Rowland to take a 45-43 lead at 14:58 then the Bobcats stretched the margin to 47-43 on a Ken Kemp layup.

Lander grabbed the lead for good on a three-pointer by Sparrow at 10:53 which gave the Bearcats a 51-49 lead.

The Bearcats connected on 21-of-55 field goals for 38.2 percent, including 4-of-13 three pointers for 30.8 percent. Lander made 24-of-36 free throws for 66.7 percent.

GCSU was 21-of-60 from the floor for 35 percent, including 7-of-26 three pointers for 26.9 percent. The Bobcats were 13-of-18 from the foul line for 72.2 percent.
