Erskine sweeps Lander in softball doubleheader

DUE WEST - The Lander women's softball team dropped a non-conference doubleheader Tuesday afternoon against Erskine. The Lady Flying Fleet won the first game, 1-0, then claimed the second, 5-2, on Katee Knapp's walk-off, three-run homer. (Game 1 Box | Game 2 Box)

Erskine improves to 3-2, while Lander drops to 3-3.

Lander's Hayley Leissner and Erskine's Lauren Gunter matched each other pitch for pitch in a game one duel.  Neither team could get any offense going and the game remained scoreless until the bottom of the fifth when Erskine's Lindsey LaPrad led the inning off by getting hit by a pitch. After a sacrifice to get her to second, LaPrad scored the winning run on Jocelyn Smith's RBI single.

Nikki Brown led the Bearcats at the plate going 1-2 with a double, while Sara Senn and Carrie Hudson each added one hit each.  Leissner (2-2) took the tough loss, allowing just one run on three hits in six innings and striking out six.

Smith led the Fleet with her RBI single, while Knapp and Melinda Bowman each had singles in the win.  Gunter picked up the win with the complete game shutout with two strike outs.

Lander took the lead early in game two when Bree Shirley scored on an RBI single from Brown in the top of the first.  The Fleet would answer back in the bottom of the inning when Kayla Vinson scored on a sacrifice fly by Knapp.  Erskine took advantage of a Lander error in the third that scored Kelly Davis to take a 2-1 lead, but the Bearcats would tie the game at 2-2 in the fifth on an RBI single from Hudson.

Knapp's three-run homer in the bottom of the seventh secured the win for Erskine.

Shirley and Natalie Smith each had two hits for Lander, while Brown and Hudson drove in the two runs for the Bearcats.  Leissner (2-3) took the loss in game two, allowing three runs in 1.2 innings of relief.

Davis led the Fleet going 2-3 with two runs scored, while Knapp was 1-3 with a home run and four RBIs.  Rebekah George picked up the win allowing two runs in seven innings and striking out nine.
