JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - The No. 15-ranked Carson-Newman men's soccer team scored a pair of first-half goals Wednesday night en route to a 2-0 victory over Lander in the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional Tournament quarterfinals at McCown Field.
Carson-Newman (14-4-1) advances to Friday's semifinals where the Eagles will face second-seeded Anderson University (12-3-3) at 4 p.m. Friday at Lees-McRae College in Banner Elk, N.C.
Lander, which was making its fifth straight NCAA tournament appearance, ends the season at 12-6-2.
The Eagles took a 1-0 lead at 16:58 on Ben Backstrom's fourth goal of the season. He was assisted by Daniel Zitt.
Carson-Newman extended the lead to 2-0 at 39:56 when Omar Cooke headed the ball in on an assist from Anthony Chiappetta. It was Cooke's 11th goal of the year.
The Eagles outshot Lander, 12-9, but the Bearcats led in corner kicks, 5-3.
C-N goalkeeper Jordan Moore tallied three saves, while Lander's Matthew Atkinson had one.
