GREENWOOD - The Lander men's soccer team ended the regular season Saturday afternoon by putting itself in position to win the Peach Belt Conference championship with a 1-0 victory over rival Clayton State. If Francis Marion defeats Flagler later today, Lander will clinch the top seed in next week's PBC tournament.
Lander improves to 10-5-1 overall and 6-1-1 in the PBC, while Clayton State drops to 10-5-1, 5-2-1.
Lander scored the lone goal of the game at 5:02 when Jamie Ramm headed in his third goal of the season on a throw in by Craig Hughes.
Clayton State missed a chance to tie it at 1-1 when Lander goalkeeper Matthew Atkinson made a brilliant save at point blank range on the Laker's shot by Leighton Fredericks in the 41st minute.
The Lakers outshot Lander, 13-7, and led in corner kicks, 5-1.
Lander goalkeeper Matthew Atkinson recorded five saves, while Clayton State's David Cristofoli had three.
