MORROW, Ga. - Kevin Kelley sank a three-point shot with four seconds remaining Saturday evening to lead the Lander men's basketball team to a 61-60 Peach Belt Conference victory over homestanding Clayton State.
Lander improves to 8-4 overall and 4-2 in the PBC, while Clayton State drops to 9-4, 2-4.
Dane Sparrow led the Lander attack with 14 points, while Houston Wright added 13. Curtis Milner led the Bearcats in rebounds with six and Ford Lawrence had 10 assists and five rebounds.
The Lakers were paced by Freddie Williams' game-high 17 points and Jaquas Dobbs added 12 points and nine rebounds.
Lander, which trailed 35-24 at halftime, connected on 22-of-53 field goals for 41.5 percent, including 8-of-29 three pointers for 27.6 percent. The Bearcats also made 9-of-10 free throws for 90 percent.
Clayton State was 20-of-46 from the floor for 43.5 percent, including 3-of-14 three pointers for 21.4 percent. The Lakers also made 17-of-31 foul shots for 54.8 percent.
The Bearcats rallied from a 14-point deficit of 38-24 with 18:54 left in the game and took a 50-48 lead on a Milner layup with 5:28 left. Lander got up by as many as five, 55-50, at 4:20 on a Milner tip-in.
The Lakers tied the game at 58-58 on a Bernard Fields free throw at 1:09, then took a 59-58 lead with 12 seconds left on a free throw by Brian Kelly.
Lander's Kevin Kelley's three-pointer gave the Bearcats a 61-59 lead with just four ticks on the clock and Lander held on when Clayton's Williams hit just one of two free throws with one second left.
