GREENWOOD – Lander's Christin Moss scored an early goal and the Lady Bearcats held on the rest of the way, defeating Anderson University 1-0 in a non-conference women's soccer match Saturday afternoon.
Lander improved to 2-0 while Anderson fell to 1-1.
Moss scored on a header at the 14:33 mark of the first half off Jannica Finnberg's well-executed corner kick. Finnberg's kick from the right corner found Moss in front of the goal, and the sophomore headed the ball into the upper left-hand corner of the net out of Anderson goalkeeper Calle McCallister's reach.
Lady Bearcats goalkeeper Rachael Hine made an outstanding save on Anderson's only shot of the first half. Korrin Kelly drilled a knuckling shot that Hine jumped and tapped over the crossbar with under six minutes left before halftime. Lander outshot the Lady Trojans 10-1 in the first half.
The Lady Bearcats had some scoring chances early in the second half, including an Annie Polhamus shot that sailed just over the crossbar. But the Lady Trojans played more evenly in the second half. Anderson's Kristin Page had a shot with six-plus minutes left that Hine made a nice save on to preserve the lead.
It was Hine's first shutout of the season as she finished with two saves. McCallister had four stops for Anderson. Lander outhot the Lady Trojans 17-4 and had a 6-2 edge in corner kicks.
