GREENWOOD - Megan Mastalerz scored the game's only goal early in the second half, giving Wingate a 1-0 non-conference women's soccer victory over Lander Saturday night.
Wingate improved to 4-1 while the Lady Bearcats suffered their first loss of the season, falling to 3-1.
Mastalerz scored at the 49:10 mark when she rocketed a direct kick into the back of the net from at least 30 yards out. The ball hit the left post and ricocheted into the goal.
The first half was scoreless, but both teams had opportunities, especially Wingate. Lander goalkeeper Rachael Hine made a big save on a shot by Kelly Adams and also intercepted several passes to prevent other shots.
The Lady Bearcats got a big chance with one minute left in the half when a player was pulled down in the box. Lander's Jannica Finnberg took a penalty kick and Lady Bulldogs goalkeeper Kathryn Smith made the save.
Wingate out-shot Lander 16-6 with Hine making eight saves. Smith made three saves for the Bulldogs.
