SAVANNAH, Ga. - The eighth-seeded Lander women's tennis team advanced to the second round of the Peach Belt Conference tournament Friday morning when the Lady Bearcats defeated ninth-seeded North Georgia College & State University, 5-1, at Armstrong Atlantic State University.
Lander improves to 12-9 overall, while North Georgia ends the season at 8-12. The Lady Bearcats will face top-seeded Armstrong Atlantic at 6:30 today (Friday).
The Lady Bearcats won two of three doubles matches then clinched the victory with singles wins at Nos. 2, 3, and 4.
In doubles, No. 1 Katherine Harrison/Brittany Smith (NG) def. Anni Pajunen/Ana Luiza Zaia, 9-8; No. 2 Caitlin Fell/Vuokko Vahatalo (LU) def. Sam Bisset/Maria Dreaden, 8-2; and No. 3 Kristinanne Emmanouil/Fernanda Oliveira (LU) def. Meredith Cash/Catie Murphy, 8-3.
In singles, No. 2 Vuokko Vahatalo (LU) def. Velina Botiva, 7-5, 6-2; No. 2 Anni Pajunen (LU) def. Katherine Harrison, 6-3, 6-1; and No. 4 Caitlin Fell (LU) def. Maria Dreaden, 6-2, 6-2.
