GREENWOOD – The No. 18-ranked Francis Marion softball team swept a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader against Lander Wednesday afternoon in a makeup game at Doug Spears Field. The Patriots won the first game, 12-2, and the second, 4-3 in extra innings. (Game 1 Box | Game 2 Box)
FMU improves to 18-4 overall and 6-2 in the PBC, while Lander drops to 4-18, 1-5.
In the first game, FMU's Michaela Wolf (13-2) earned the win as she struck out six and allowed two earned runs on two hits in the complete seven innings.
Austin Murray (1-9) took the loss, striking out one, walking two and allowing four earned runs on three hits in 3.2 innings pitched.
Francis Marion took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a Shannan Tyson's RBI double and Monica Wofford's RBI single. The Patriots added two more runs in the fourth inning on Kat Beauvais' two-run, home run.
Lander cut the lead to 4-2 in the fifth on Lindsey Whitfield's two-run homer.
Francis Marion finished the game by scoring eight runs in the top of the seventh.
In the second game FMU's Wolf (14-2) earned the win, after taking the mound in relief.
Murray (1-10) suffered the loss as she struck out six and walked six in nine innings.
Francis Marion jumped ahead in the first inning on RBI singles from Jessica Birchmeier and Allie Aleman. Lander tied the game in the bottom of the inning on Haley Foster's two-run single.
FMU went back up 3-2 in the third on Wolf's RBI single only to have Lander come back and in the fourth to tie it again as Brandi Bagwell's single advanced Daisy Stewart, who later scored on a fielding error.
In the top of the ninth, Wofford led off with a double and scored on Birchmeier's RBI double.
For Francis Marion, Birchmeier went 2-4 with one single, one double and one RBI.
For Lander Amber Yarborough went 1-4 with one run scored, and Haley Foster went 1-4 with two RBI.
