GREENWOOD - The No. 2-ranked Georgia College & State University softball team used three big innings Tuesday afternoon to sweep Lander in a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader at Doug Spears Field. The Bobcats won the first game, 6-2, and the second, 4-2. (Game 1 Box | Game 2 Box)
GCSU improves to 28-6 overall and 7-3 in the PBC, while Lander falls to 8-27, 1-11.
In the first game, GCSU scored three runs in both the fifth and seventh innings to claim the win. The Bobcats Mandy Chandler (15-3) earned the win as she struck out seven, walked four and allowed no earned runs on four hits in the complete seven innings.
Lander's Austin Murray (2-12) suffered the loss as she struck out six, walked five and allowed five earned runs on four hits in 6.2 innings pitched.
For GCSU, Tonya Medders went 1-for-3 with one home run and three RBI; Sherquita Bostick went 1-for-4 with one triple, one run scored and one RBI; and Chelsea Wilson went 1-for-3 with one double, two runs scored and one RBI.
In the second game, GCSU scored all four of its runs in the second inning. Medders (11-3) recorded the win as she struck out five, walked one and allowed two earned runs on five hits in the complete seven innings.
Lander's Jenna Kellett (2-10) took the loss as she walked two and allowed four earned runs on five hits in 1.2 innings pitched.
For Lander, Lindsey Whitfield went 2-for-3 with one home run, one double, and two runs scored.
The Bobcats' Kori Pickowitz went 1-for-4 with one double and one run scored; Maggie Davis went 2-for-2 with one double; Wilson went 2-for-2 with two RBI and Medders went 2-for-4.
