DUE WEST, S.C. - The Lander softball team dropped to 8-24 on the season Friday afternoon when the Bearcats dropped a non-conference doubleheader at Erskine College. The Fleet won the first game, 6-4, and the second, 9-0. (Game 1 Box | Game 2 Box)
Erskine improves to 9-14-1.
The Fleet took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on Lindsey LaPrad's two-run RBI single, then stretched the lead to 3-0 in the second on Joceyln Smith's RBI single.
Erskine would add three more runs in the fifth to take a 6-1 lead.
Lander scored three runs in the seventh, including Lindsey Whitfield's second home run of the game.
Vinson led the Fleet at the plate going 3-for-3 with one double, one triple, and one RBI, while Ashlee LaFontaine went 3-for-3 with two runs scored. Gunter picked up the win, allowing one earned run in seven innings of work and striking out five.
Whitfield led the Bearcats on offense going 3-for-4 with two home runs and three RBI, while Hudson finished 2-for-3 with one double and one run scored. Nikki Brown took the loss allowing three runs in three innings of work.
In game two, the Fleet jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first on a two-run homer from Katee Knapp. Knapp would make it a 3-0 game in the third with her second home run in as many at bats and Erskine would not look back adding six runs in the fourth to take the 9-0 victory.
Knapp finished the game 2-for-2 with two home runs and four RBI, while LaFontaine went 1-for-2 with two RBI and Rebekah George went 2-for-2. George picked up the win allowing just two hits in five shutout innings of work.
Sara Senn went 1-for-2 with one double for the Bearcats and Lindsey Sammons was also 1-for-2. Austin Murray took the loss for Lander allowing seven runs in 3 1/3 innings of work.
