GREENWOOD----The Erskine College softball team held Lander to seven hits Thursday afternoon as the Lady Flying Fleet claimed a 1-0 and 4-2 non-conference doubleheader sweep at Doug Spears Field. (Game 1 Box | Game 2 Box)
Erskine improves to 2-2 overall, while Lander slips to 0-6.
In the first game, Lauren Gunter (1-1) earned the win for Erskine as she struck out four, walked three and allowed just three hits in the seven-inning shutout. Lander's Austin Murray (0-2) took the loss, striking out six, walking two and allowing just four hits.
Erskine scored the lone run of the game in the first inning when Jocelyn Smith walked, stole second, then scored on a fielding error by left fielder Aubrie Phillips.
In the second game, Erskine's Amanda Norton (1-0) claimed the victory on the mound as she struck out five and allowed two runs on three hits in 6.2 innings of work. Lander's Jenna Kellett (0-2) suffered the loss as she struck out four, walked two and allowed two earned runs on seven hits in 5.1 innings.
The Flying Fleet took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Kelly Davis singled, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Smith, then scored on Ashley LaFontaine's RBI single to centerfield.
Erskine stretched its lead to 2-0 in the third inning on LaFontaine's RBI triple which scored Katie Knapp. EC added added two runs in the fourth inning when Melinda Bowman scored on Kayla Vinson's RBI single to left field and Vinson crossed the plate on an error by Lander first baseman Nikki Brown.
Lander posted a two-run rally in the bottom of the seventh with two outs and bases loaded when Brandi Bagwell and Aerin Phillips scored on Lindsey Whitifield's RBI single.
For Lander, Stewart went 1-for-3 with one double.
For Erskine, LaFontaine went 2-for-4 with one triple and two RBI.
